EDGE advantages

The mobile phone has become part of our everyday life and the mobile telephony operators have to provide even more facilities for its use: the possibility to access the information in different formats (text, sound, picture, motion), entertainment applications, watching videos on the mobile phone etc.
For these applications to work in real time and with no interruptions, a network that allows a high data transfer rate is needed.

EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) is an evolution technology for the existing GSM network. Orange Romania is developing EDGE as an intermediate technological step towards UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephony System).
Compared to UMTS, which needs its own communication infrastructure and a new operation license, EDGE technology implies only software and hardware modifications in the existing network. EDGE provides transfer speeds that can support specific UMTS applications with much lower investments for the network.
Therefore, a superior speed for data transfer is obtained, which is 3 times higher than GPRS - of 120 - 150 kbps.

In addition to the services provided on GPRS support, the new ones will include video streaming on mobile phones, like watching TV news on the mobile phone in real time, watching images transmitted by a surveillance camera.

The demand for an increase in the transfer rate has emerged first from the business sector, which uses certain Intranet access applications, such as the applications intended for the sales agents operating on the field. They need real time information about the situation of the stock and current prices in order to deliver the different products and to confirm the ordered quantities the very moment they are at the customers’ offices. With EDGE technology, such transactions can be carried out much faster and confirmations will be received instantantly.

EDGE technology can also be used to connect various locations with limited or seasonal activities, for which the installation of a standard IP - VPN system is not justified in terms of costs. With an EDGE/GPRS modem connected to a fixed point of work (PC), you can have higher-speed access to the Internet or the Intranet compared to the fixed-line telephony and with increased cost efficiency.
The Personal Information Management (PIM) is another application often required in the business sector, which helps the user to synchronise personal information (meetings agenda, telephone numbers) between PC and the mobile equipment (telephone, PDA).

The past two-three years have witnessed a significant increase in demand in the field of telemetry and monitoring applications. Here too, EDGE is going to enhance the reliability of such applications.
EDGE has another important advantage compared to the UMTS technology or to the operators relying on CDMA: it is GSM compatible. The coverage will be practically the same, namely 98%. Anyone having a GSM telephone with EDGE/GPRS capabilities will be able to use the two networks, GPRS and EDGE, with no particular modifications or settings on the mobile phone.

As a first step, Orange intends to cover the crowded urban areas, that is big cities like Bucharest, Timisoara, Brasov, Cluj-Napoca etc. The roads between cities will still have GPRS coverage and as far as the use of the services is concerned, the clients will not experience any inconvenience. With an EDGE/GPRS compatible telephone, transfer from one network to another is made automatically.
Moreover, with an EDGE/GPRS compatible telephone, the customers will also benefit from roaming services, in networks with which Orange Romania has concluded GPRS Roaming agreements.
