Snow White
the production by the Ballet Preljocaj

which premiered in France on 25 September is being brought to Bucharest by Orange

Snow White, the newest production by the Ballet Preljocaj, is an awe-inspiring contemporary dance show blending narrative and romance, inspired by the well-known tale by the Brothers Grimm. Renowned French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj brings together no fewer than 26 dancers from his company in an outstanding visual display. The wondrous tale expressed through the medium of dance will be accompanied by the strains of beautiful symphonic scores by Gustav Mahler. The dancers’ costumes have been designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Assessed by the French press as a “…fabulous tale in images [which] presents sequences of dazzling beauty” (Le Monde), “Snow White is a delight” (Libération).

The show will have three showings in Bucharest, on 28, 29 and 30 November, and will mark a high point in the Bucharest autumn cultural season. The Romanian public will be seeing the show immediately after it enjoyed immense public and media success at the Lyon Dance Biennial and subsequently in Paris in October.

“I was very keen to tell a story, offer something magical and enchanted. No doubt it was to avoid getting stuck in a rut. Also because, like everyone, I love stories. I have remained true to the version by the Brothers Grimm, with just a few personal variations based on my own analysis of the symbols in the tale. Bettelheim describes Snow White as an Oedipus in reverse. The wicked stepmother is the central character in the tale. She is the one whom I examine through her narcissistic determination not to give up on seduction and her role as a woman – a determination which causes her to sacrifice her stepdaughter. Symbols speak equally to adults and children, they’re for everyone, and that’s why I like fairy tales.”

Tickets will be on sale at the Bucharest National Theatre from 17 November.
