• când compune piese, dacă nu sună bine cântate doar la pian şi voce sau la chitară şi voce, mai bine renunţă.
• mizează pe îndrăzneală şi acurateţe. În stilul tipic, lipsit de menajamente Jay Kay zice “încearcă naibii să te opreşti din a transforma totul în ceva prea confuz. Mă ia valul adesea şi încep să zic ”vai, nu este îndeajuns de profund, de liric”. Dar ia stai puţin – unele dintre cele mai bune cântece din istorie sunt simple. Ascultă Stevie Wonder – “totul este permis în dragoste, doi oameni joacă acest joc”. Nu e vorba de cine ştie ce filosofie. Însă e vorba de sentimente, trăiri. Uneori nu contează dacă tu cânţi “vaca stătea în vârful dealului”. Dacă o faci aşa cum trebuie, atunci va avea succes. Asta e regula de aur.”

noul album

“Rock Dust Light Star”, lansat în noiembrie 2010 la Mercury Records, e un album ce s-a lăsat mult aşteptat- mai exact, 5 ani. “Ne-am încadrat în limite. Dacă nu scoteam acum acest album, oamenii ar fi ajuns să spună “a, da, parcă îmi amintesc de ei.”, spune Jay Kay.
Însă trupa a revenit cu un al şaptelea album- poetic, retrospectiv şi plin de inspiraţie. Este rezultatul a 2 ani de muncă în studioul lui Jay Kay din Buckinghamshire, la legendarul Hook End Manor din Oxfordshire “cel mai bun studio din ţară”, cum spun tinerii coproducători ai albumului împreună cu Jay Kay, Charlie Russell şi Brad Spence, şi în Tailanda.

“De ce în Tailanda? Ne-am relaxat şi noi un pic. Studioul de acolo avea acelaşi mixer ca cel de acasă şi a fost mai ieftin să ne ducem acolo decât la Hook End şi să mai îndurăm pe deasupra şi vremea englezească de doi lei în februarie.”, zice Jay Kay jucăuş.
 
Balada cu iz californian, „Blue Skies”, dezvăluie o nouă versiune a vocii lui Jay Kay. „Hurtin”, al doilea single, o piesă minimală cu note de chitară electrică şi cu o voce electrizantă, te duce cu gândul la faptul că a fost scris din prima şi că a ieşit ceva extraordinar.

Despre noul stil vocal, Jay spune “Mi-am folosit vocea un pic diferit, poate am fost mai relaxat. Am lăsat-o mai moale. Trebuie până la urmă să creşti odată cu muzica.”

Jamiroquai şi-a promovat noul album cu o serie de concerte în Europa, precum şi cu un show alături de Stevie Wonder în Hyde Park, Londra.

Buffalo Man

Este numele personajului nelipsit de pe albumele trupei şi de pe marea majoritate a materialelor de promovare. Buffalo Man a fost creat de Jay Kay între 1992 şi 1993, fiind un fel de autoportret al artistului purtând o pălărie cu coarne de taur. De-a lungul timpului, personajul a cunoscut mici variaţii, în funcţie de tema albumului pe care a trebuit să apară. De exemplu, pentru albumul „Cosmic Girl” i s-a desenat o stea ca inimă, înconjurată de 2 inele orbitale.

Cele peste 30 de maşini de lux spun de la sine că Jay Kay e un împătimit al automobilelor. Îi place să conducă şi se poate lăuda cu titlul de cel mai bun pilot-vedetă, obţinut în cadrul emisiunii Top Gear.

Este recunoscut şi pentru pălăriile lui spectaculoase. Fie că e vorba de un concert sau de o ieşire în public alege să poarte una dintre cele peste 50 de pălării din colecţie. Dintre acestea, unele sunt făcute chiar de mama artistului.

În plus, Jay Kay ia lecţii de pilotaj pentru elicoptere şi este fascinat de religie, ecologie şi astronomie.
